There are classes for every age group, teen night on Fridays and an ongoing community art project exploring recycling e-waste.

NEWA is excited to announce Gloria de los Santos as the featured artist of the month for May 2010.  Her exhibit, Art & Planned Obsolescence is provocative and is informed by how manufacturers produce items that are created to break, proliferating the un-ending cycle of consumers who purchase products that do not last.

The reception is Thursday, May 6, 6 pm – 9 pm. A recycled art demonstration will be held on May 6th from 6-7:30 pm.

Western culture’s “buy” mentality is infested with products becoming quickly psychologically obsolete. This mentality is endorsed and supported by the current administration as evidenced by the large rebates being offered by companies, States and at the federal level to buy new energy efficient cars and more recently, appliances. Planned obsolescence fuels hyper-consumption which impacts heavily on wallets.

de los Santos’ work also includes an installation of that almost-obsolete-medium: the daily newspaper and our over-packaged world. Using broken electronic components, throw-away packaging, and a newspaper kiosk box, de los Santos creates a fantasy art Mecca. Or, will newspapers reinvent themselves before their demise? de los Santos hopes so.  She also hopes that by reviving these objects and re-purposing them into something else that they will be kept out of a landfill at least for one more year.

NEWA is excited to announce Drew Erensel as the Featured Artist for the month of April 2010.

NEWA is excited to announce Simona Barela as the featured artist of the month for March 2010.  Showings of your work are featured in the gallery for the month of March.  Much of her work will continue to be availble for viewing after March as well.
